Miniature Pony Joins Trick Horse Show

Georgia Bruce has a new member of her trick horse show.
The horse is a 2 and a half year old brown minature pony gelding called "Foxy".
Foxy arrived a few days before the equine influenza outbreak occurred, so Georgia has not been able to start training him yet. She plans to start training Foxy over the Christmas and new year break.

Georgia plans to teach Foxy to perform at liberty with Rumba and Astro and also to teach him tricks.

Georgia has already taught Astro and Rumby to perform at liberty. They circle at the walk trot and canter around Georgia in perfect unison. They are both collected and often move with synchronised footfalls!

Astro goes on the outside of the circle, Rumby in the middle. Foxy will join the act and go in closest to Georgia. This will make a three horse liberty act with a small medium and large horse. All horses are bay/brown and will look very cute performing together at liberty.

There is only one small detail to address.... Foxy needs to be trained!

At the moment he is still very green, he is quite pushy on the ground and like to try and kick when having his feet picked up. He is a small pony and has been "muscled around" rather than trained. This is a common mistake people make when handling miniature ponies.

Miniature ponies, foals and young horses should all be taught, handled and trained in the same way you would a big horse. Astro the big young warmblood is 17hh, if he behaved the way the miniature pony does he would be dangerous! Even a little pony can cause injury and must be handled with care. If the pony is going to be handled by children it is all the more important the pony has very good responses to all the basic light pressure cues on the ground and under saddle. The pony should also be very quiet, old experienced and unflappable if to be handled and ridden by children.

Foxy has a quiet nature but he is very intelligent and will be a wonderful addition to the trick show.

Rumba and Astro have been introduced to Foxy gradually. He seems to be getting along quite well with them.
